Fly more sustainably with SAS

SAS is giving private travelers and corporate customers the chance to accelerate the aviation industry’s move toward more sustainable travel by purchasing sustainable aviation fuel, such as biofuels.

SAS is dedicated to making aviation more sustainable. To do this, the airline aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 25% before 2030 compared with the base year 2005.

The main focus is on renewing the SAS fleet by adding more fuel-efficient aircraft. But to help achieve its goal, SAS is also undertaking many other emission-reducing initiatives, that now include giving individual travelers and corporate customers the option to buy biofuel.

Our target is to use an amount of biofuel that equates to the amount of fuel used in all our domestic flights by 2030.

“Aircraft are getting more efficient,” says Lars Andersen Resare, Head of Environment & CSR at SAS. “But the next step for us is to replace fossil fuels with biofuels. Our target is to use an amount of biofuel that equates to the amount of fuel used in all our domestic flights by 2030.

“Biofuels can reduce climate--affecting CO2 emissions by up to 80% throughout their lifecycle compared with fossil fuels,” says -Andersen Resare. “But we’re in the early stages of the transition to more sustainable fuels. Availability is limited and the price is some three to four times more expensive than ordinary fossil fuel.”

Engaging companies

By enabling travelers to purchase biofuel, SAS gives customers a choice to be part of the transition and commercialization of  large-scale biofuel production.

SAS has already seen great interest from its travelers. One example is the Swedish cross-country ski team’s decision to purchase biofuel. The team has bought biofuel from SAS that corresponds to the amount of fuel used for their trips between Stockholm and Östersund in 2019.

“In 2019, we started to roll out the SAS Corporate Sustainability Initiative which aims to engage companies in the transition by being part of a movement, including biofuel usage for its travel with SAS,” says Andersen Resare.

“I am pleased that by offering biofuel as a travel extra, we can offer travelers the opportunity to contribute to lower emissions and more sustainable travel,” adds Andersen Resare.
